Common Online Job Scams to Avoid

We’ve said it before, and we’ll say it again—the internet is not a safe place. Though online working opportunities are real, so are scamming opportunists. These crooks abound the internet and are always ready to jump into any chance to con unsuspecting people. To help protect yourself from these criminals, here are some of the most common online job scams.

Money Laundering

One of the most common online job scams involves money. An applicant will be asked to go through the normal hiring process—application, interview, assessment, etc. Usually, an applicant will be told that they’ve secured the job and can start working immediately. When it’s time to get paid, the applicant will be given a check that contains a huge amount of money—more than the agreed rate. Then, applicant will be asked to deposit the check. Once the check is encashed, applicant will be instructed to take his or her pay, and transfer the rest of the money to another person’s bank account.

This is called money laundering, and is against the law in almost every country in the world. Unless you’re hired as part of the HR or admin team, the only money you should be receiving from your employer is your salary. If your employer starts asking you to deposit and transfer money using your personal bank account and not the company’s own, it’s time to step back. You are obviously being used to launder money and if you get caught, you’ll be facing serious criminal charges—regardless of whether you were aware of it or not.

Fishing for Free Services

Another common type of job scam is getting freelancers to submit their works for free. Here, successful applicants will usually be asked to go through a ‘test’. For writers and graphic designers, it often involves submitting a sample work. Meanwhile, for other positions such as a virtual assistant post, applicants may be asked to complete a certain task.

Although most companies do require applicants to submit an original work, these are usually paid. For example, a writer required to submit an original 1k-word article (longer than the usual 100-300 words) should expect to get paid for it. The same goes for applicants who are asked to complete certain tasks that require both effort and time.

Red Flags to Watch Out For

Sometimes, a simple job posting can already indicate a scam. As long as you remain vigilant, you can easily save yourself from these online job scams. Simply keep an eye out for these red flags:

  • Employer requires you to pay or purchase something in exchange for being hired. This includes buying a set of goods (common in pyramid schemes) or paying for your own training.
  • You are required to provide personal details that aren’t usually asked such as your social security number, passport number, and credit card number. Unless you’re supposed to be receiving any form of payment from them e.g. salary, do not provide your bank account details.
  • The job offers a ridiculously large sum of money for a very easy task. This usually suggests that the job is risky and possibly illegal.
