A new type of scam tactic forces iPhone users into entering a Russian hacking site, without their knowledge. According to reports, users will receive a text message that states their iPhone is locked.

The text message allegedly informs unsuspecting users that they’re locked from using their Apple IDs. To unlock the account, a link will be included in the message.

Text messages usually go like this, “Your Apple ID was locked. To unlock your account, verify your information here (fake link).” When opened, the link directs users to a website. This website looks like a legitimate Apple website. It has the same Apple logo and Apple ID log-in software. The website will ask the user to fill out the required log-in details. Doing so fully compromises the user’s device.

Although no longer new, the mobile phishing scam are designed to steal all sensitive information stored in your device. These include log-in details, credit card information, and other pertinent information.

Keep Yourself Safe

“Mobile form factors make it much more challenging to spot fake sites from real sites, as URLs may be shortened on screen,” says Tom Davidson, a cyber-security expert from the Lookout. “Users should be very suspicious of unsolicited messages such as these and can take advantage of a mobile security app to provide another layer of defense.”

Since phishing scams have grown more sophisticated over the years, it is easy to be victimized. Especially for people with less technical knowledge about the internet.

To keep yourself safe from such scams, here are a few things you can do.

To avoid this scam tactic you should delete all text messages that contain unfamiliar links right away. Next, refrain from opening mobile links that come from unknown numbers. If you’ve made the mistake of clicking on a link, delete the message and exit the website immediately. You should also change all your passwords and other important information. Lastly, to ensure your safety, always use your common sense. If you receive a message that says your iPhone is locked, don’t panic. Because if you can still use your device without any hindrance, then most likely, the message is false.
