President Donald Trump says he will ban video app TikTok from operating in the U.S. A Chinese company holds ownership of the popular video app.
Regarding TikTok concerns, President Trump has expressed his desire to ban the app totally from the United States.
The move follows concerns that the foreign-owned short video application may be a national security risk. Just last Friday, people involved in the issue within the Trump administration expected the president to sign an order. This order was to force the Chinese company ByteDance to sell the US operations of TikTok to Microsoft.
Meanwhile, TikTok remains to be one of the most popular apps in the US, and throughout the world. Moreover, it is the first Chinese social media platform to gain significant traction with users from outside its territory. According to analytics company Sensor Tower, the app received more than 315 million downloads in the first three months of 2020.
A Threat to Cyber Security?
Critics of the app have voiced their concerns regarding data security. According to them, all data that the app collects could potentially end up in the hands of the Chinese government. However, representatives of the app have stated that it stores all its data outside of China.
“TikTok US user data is stored in the US, with strict controls on employee access. TikTok’s biggest investors come from the US. We are committed to protecting our users’ privacy and safety as we continue working to bring joy to families and meaningful careers to those who create on our platform,” says TikTok spokesperson Hilary McQuaide.
However, all these risks to cybersecurity remain to be theoretical. The allegations over Tiktok is not sure. There are many reasons but one of these is the lack of hard evidence.
